Gender and Jewish Identity: A Conversation with Abby Stein

Thursday, April 14, 2016 7:00pm
UC Berkeley Hillel | Berkeley, CA

Join us for an evening with Abby Stein, as she speaks about her journey leaving the Ultra-Orthodox Jewish world and coming out as a woman of trans experience. Born into the Yiddish-speaking Hasidic community of Brooklyn, Abby is part of a well-respected rabbinic dynasty and a descendant of the Baal Shemtov, the founder of Hasidic Judaism. Abby started the process of her two-fold transition when she made the bold decision to leave her community and explore other movements of Judaism. Last fall, she took the next step by coming out as a woman of trans experience. She has since been become an important voice in speaking out as a transactivist in the Jewish community.

Abby has been featured in various news sources, including The New York Times, The Forward, New York Post, New York Magazine, CNN, and Huffington Post Live. She currently lives in New York City, where she is a student at Columbia University.

This event is co-sponsored by Berkeley Hillel, Berkeley Jewish Student Union, Keshet, Jewish Community Relations Council, and Bechol Lashon. Light refreshments will be served. SEATING LIMITED - PLEASE REGISTER FOR FREE TICKET WITH THE LINK.
